I don't think it's an Arabic loan word. If it were, there would be an alternative. It's probably a proto Afro Asiatic word.
Ama is the same as mise. It means "or" not "but".
I understand borrowing tech and religious words but a basic word like but

Yeah, basic words like "but", "what", and "who" are usually not borrowed and if they are, then the non-borrowed version remains in heavy use. I can't think of a synonym for laakin so I don't think it's borrowed.

yes, balse is correct. still laakiin feels more natural, maybe due to frequent use
Yep, laakin/lakinse is used by the majority... but the right one is balse...
I use both, depending on the people I talk to.
To elderly somali people, I use balse... but the youth and teens of my age...
I just say laakin.
