Western countries are setting Somalia up for failure by insisting on democracy

Democracy, particularly liberal democracy, is a good thing and it is the best system for managing a country. However before becoming democratic, societies need to reach a certain stage of socio-economic development. They need an educated population, a middle-class, existing national institutions and a national identity. Except for the last one, Somalia does not have any of that (and even the Somali national identity has been severely weakened since 1991).

Somalis are currently a largely nomadic, uneducated population of very poor people. The average Somali back home is focused just on staying alive. People in this condition are unlikely to become a successful democratic constituency. Even if Somalia reaches one-man-one-vote in 2020, it is likely that the 'democracy' will degrade to naked tribal clientelism where people are pressured by illiterate clan elders to vote for the candidate that has paid them off, and where there is also widespread vote fraud and manipulation. Somalia does not have the necessary critical mass of informed, educated people that can serve as the backbone of a successful and accountable democratic government. Most Somalis back home are illiterate, and most of the educated people have dispersed into the diaspora (and even among the diaspora the educated are a minority).

Given Somalia's current condition, it's irresponsible for the Western countries to force democracy on the country.
Somalia can one day become a successful democratic nation, but not now. Pushing democracy prematurely will set the country up for failure.

What Somalia needs is a strong-handed, benevolent authoritarian regime that will focus on promoting rapid economic development. We don't need to waste money on elections, we need roads. We don't need 30% women in parliament, we need maternity hospitals. We don't need committees of illiterate clan elders, we need schools teaching people how to read and write. We don't need endless hotel conferences promoting 'reconciliation,' we need a government that has a monopoly on violence and which crushes all the endless tribal blood feuds ravaging the bush.

We basically need another MSB, just minus the excessive violence, nepotism, and the retarded marxist economic policies. Despite his many shortcomings, and despite all the people he tragically killed later in his administration, MSB's government was the most successful we've had: Somalia was the safest country in Africa back then and he dramatically improved literacy. Authoritarianism works, just ask China.

I couldn't agree more

In the late 80s it was the perfect time for MSB to resign and have a democracy, he insisted on staying sadly

Hopefully we have something like this in the future, all these African countries have socially evolved by having these authoritarian regimes, which lead to them having democracies currently

Since they are forcing this shit on us, we should do like Ethiopia and have a "democracy".

MSB lost all his vigor by the 1980s. He grew old and suffered from medical issues. You are absolutely correct, he should have left.

Besides his failure to step down, what really fucked up MSB's regime was nepotism. Paranoid of non-relatives, he appointed incompetent family members to many key government positions and this led to disaster. His half-brother Abdirahman Jamma Barre managed foreign affairs and state finance and regularly astonished foreign visitors by displaying a shocking ignorance of both topics, and he made his son-in-law General Morgan in charge of state security and this led to civil war because Morgan was a dumb brute who used extreme violence to try and solve solve problems that could have been easily settled politically.

MSB would have been much more successful if he articulated and promoted a coherent national political ideology that was aimed at socioeconomic development. Such an ideology could have attracted supporters to his government, from which he could find loyal, non-familial, officials to help run the government. Unfortunately the Kacaan did not have a consistent ideology, and Barre just espoused support for whatever ideology would earn him patronage from abroad.

Unlike Somalis, Ethiopians have coherent political ideologies and are loyal to them. This is how they are able to maintain a functional political system despite being a poor, ethnically diverse country. Ethiopians are also better than Somalis in the sense that they highly value intellectualism. They pick as their leader the smartest among them, which is how the short, sickly Meles Zenawi became leader of the Tigray Rebels and eventually Prime Minister of Ethiopia. He was very, very smart and the Ethiopians respected him because of it. It was Zenawi's profound intelligence that allowed Ethiopia to avert a power-struggle after the derg was overthrown and which propelled so much economic growth in the country. His smarts also allowed him to regularly manipulate the West. This is what the U.S embassy reported about Zenawi to Washington (from Wikileaks):

Meles is a details man. He knows them inside and out, and he deploys them quickly and precisely to establish and defend his arguments. Whenever we raise concerns, he responds with highly nuanced and highly specific details to counter our arguments. He is particularly adept at using such details to counter points raised by senior USG (and presumably other foreign) officials. On numerous occasions we have observed Meles run circles around visitors who note general concerns by throwing out detailed responses.
