In layman's terms the fact that the ADH gene which is used to produce the enzyme Alcohol dehydrogenase was positively selected for after the genes came from the levant somewhere around 2000 years ago. The variant ADH1B is positively selected in agricultural group which suggests that this variant reduces the risks of alcoholism and cancer (ADH*48His). This positive selection is not evident in nearby hunter gatherer populations in subsaharan africa. Meaning that agricultural practices is the main reason why these genes were selected for. When people farm they will drink
