Somaliland lawmakers intimidated allegedly by plain clothed officers

HARGEISA (SD) – According to MP Barkhad Jama Batun, unidentified individuals continuously harass and intimidate members of the Somaliland House of Representatives.

Opposition lawmakers have reportedly complained of intimidation by unknown groups, and have so far received no response or assistance from the country’s law enforcement agencies, added Batun.

“Some councilors have told us that they are been terrorised, that their vehicles are being cut off on the road, and when they reported the perpetrators to the security forces, no action have been taken against them,” Batun said.

Some lawmakers, who made the allegations before parliament, said it was “impossible” for these elected MPs to do their work effectively as long as this fear exists.

It is not just Lawmakers , but members of the Somaliland media and the public have been harassed by these plain clothed security officials, who have illegally beaten and arrested these innocent citizens.

Some of the victims and lawmakers told local media that President Muse Bihi’s son was behind the illegal arrests and violations.

The President’s son is accused of setting up private jails in Hargeisa and for targeting members of the opposition and and anyone who criticizes his fathers controversial leadership.

These abuses remind Somalilanders of the atrocities committed by the Somali government forces against the people of Somaliland, which led to a long and brutal civil war in the country.
The government has not yet commented on the lawmakers’ complaints and the deteriorating security situation in the country.
