Galmudug, puntland, and somaliland have very challenging environments and majority of their soils falls into lowest category poor soils. Majority of our soils are calcisol, gypsisol, and solonchaks.

Somaliland has cambisol soil, dark orange, which is excellent soil and can be found north of hargeisa and extends south to jigjiga . You also have some around cerigabo and small pockets around maydh.

somaliland also has small pocket of flovisol which is another excellent soil, blue color, and looks to be found near Zeila and border of Djibouti .

everything else is poor quality soils so pretty challenging environment

It does have some cambisol, dark orange, which is a excellent soil. Biggest pocket can be found around cerigabo. You have some near Bosaso, xafuun, bender beyla.
You also have thin strip from eyl that stretches down to garcaad.

puntland also has some fluvisol, blue color, which is also an excellent soil usually found near bodies of water. It’s found just north of Borran not sure what is located there city wise or body of water wise

So what are you telling me here, you saying I can't farm or nothing?

:dwill:
We have some areas with good soil like Cambisol and fluvisol , unfortunately majority of our soil is poor soil, gypsisol and Calciso. It’s still farmable it’s just needs a lot more investment and human intervention we also have to be careful with product selection. Shows how ingenious reer puntland and somaliland are to overcame and adapt.

Gypsisol is best for grazing but can grow crops with irrigation drainage and adding organic material

Gypsisols are soils that are characterized by a high proportion of gypsum in the soil profile. Gypsum is a mineral that is used in various industries, including agriculture. While Gypsisols can be challenging to farm due to their low water-holding capacity and high salinity, certain crops can thrive in these soils with proper management practices.

Some of the crops that are suitable for growing in Gypsisols include:

  1. Cotton: Cotton is a drought-resistant crop that can tolerate high levels of salinity. It is a major cash crop in many countries that have Gypsisols.
  2. Barley: Barley is a cool-season cereal crop that can be grown in Gypsisols. It is a hardy crop that can tolerate drought and saline conditions.
  3. Forage crops: Forage crops such as alfalfa, clover, and ryegrass can be grown in Gypsisols. These crops are often used as animal feed and can help improve soil health.
  4. Citrus fruits: Some citrus fruits, such as grapefruit and lemons, can be grown in Gypsisols. These crops are often grown in areas with warm climates and low rainfall.
  5. Vegetables: Some vegetables, such as spinach, carrots, and onions, can be grown in Gypsisols. However, these crops require proper irrigation and nutrient management to grow successfully.
It is important to note that the suitability of crops for Gypsisols depends on various factors, such as soil depth, drainage, and fertility. Farmers should consult with local agricultural experts to determine the best crops to grow in their particular Gypsisol.

Sanaag is blessed. What are the names of the pink, orange, yellow, tan, and blue soils?
Sanaag is, it has a lot of excellent soil especially around ceerigabo. And west of bossaso lots of top notch soil in dark orange sections. The blue is also good soil near Borran/baran. There should be body of water nearby maybe you are familiar with it. Cambisol and fluvisol top of the cream when it comes to soil. SSC can be well off state
