"He saved me and his memory has never left my mind. In the early 1980s, my small unit was pinned down at the border town of Balanbale. A bullet pierced one of my legs, and I fell to the ground. The majority of my colleagues died except one: Warsame. Warsame was a young soldier who at that time was newly-wed. His wife was one of the prettiest girls in town, and he was very much in love with her, he never stopped boasting how lucky he was to have her. He was full of life and was a proper comedian. He even made our old timers laugh. I thought Warsame and I were going to die and I said my prayers. On the other hand, Warsame had other plans. He lifted me up and told me to run as fast as I can whilst he took a prone position and returned suppressive fire so that I could get away and live for another day. With a bullet lodged in my leg, I ran as hard as I could with excruciating pain and met the Somali oncoming backup. They tended my wounds and mounted a rescue operation for Warsame, who moments ago saved my life. When we returned, it was too late. I just didn’t understand. He was healthy, not wounded but yet sacrificed his young life so that I could live another day. That night, I wept like I never wept before. As a battle-hardened soldier, it broke me. War is hell; peace is life."

"Wuu i badbaadiyey, xusuustiisana noloshayda kama baxayso waligeed. Waxay ahayd bilowgii 1980s markii Balanbale oo ah tuulo xadka ku taala la qabsady. Kooxdii aan ka tirsana oo aad u yaraa waa la jabiyey, xabad ba igaga dhacday lugaha kadib dhulkaan ku dhacay. Inta badan asaxaabtaydi waa dhinteen marka laga reebo Warsame Warsame oo ahaa askari aad u da’ayar isla markaana caruus ahaa, xaaskiisu waxay ahayd gabadha ugu quruxda badan magalaada aadna wuu u jeclaa. Wuuna ku faani jiray. Wuxuu ahaa nin dadka ka qosliya markasta wuxuu samayn jiray inuu naga qosliyo, waxaan u haystay aniga iyo Warsame in aanu dhimanayno, waan duceeyey. Warsame wuxuu laha qorshe kale, intuu sare I qaaday ayuu yiri, carar intii aad awoodi karto isaguna wuu I difaacayey intaas oo dhan, si aan u helo jid aan ku badbaado una nolaado maalin kale. Maadama xabad igaga dhacday lugaha, waan orday ilaa xad intii aan awoodi karayey anigoo xanuun dareemaya kadib waxaan la kulmay ciidan gurmad ah kuwaas oo i badbaadiyey. Warsame noloshayda ayuu badbaadiyey. Kadib markii aanu noqonay, wakhti danbe ahayd, waan ka so gaari weyney. Maan fahansanayn taas. Wuu caafimaad qabay wiil dhalinyaro ayuu ahaa, muu dhawacmin laakiin noloshiisi wuuxu khatar taas u galiyey si uu aniga I badbaadiyo, Habeenkaas waxaan u ooyey si anaan weligay u ooyin. Colaad waa lagu dhintaa: nabad waa lagu dhaqmaa."

AUN warsame and the countless young men who lost their live in unnecessary wars created by old senile somali men.

There is soo much horror we didn't witness simply by being soo young at the time and leaving for the west. Imagine then those same people who fled and never witnessed the civil war calling for old scores to be settled and further blood shed whilst in west.

I understand that, but we still lost many family members and our communities live through trauma everyday.

haa walahi this is single most thing that baffles me. I can dismiss their qabiilism and qabiil loyalty but not the "lets repeat the 80s bombing, clan cleansing" etc.
these kind of ppl are so detached about reality.
maybe we should create qurbajoog exclusive zones for them to practise and test their "unuka leh" mentality.

u didn't have to die or see horrors to have been effected by the war. u had to be related to someone who died, or went through experiences like this, and it effected you too. As for those who ask to settle old scores, it's because they haven't seen war.
