Somali President Farmaajo has announced that the capital Mogadishu will host a peace and reconciliation conference in June.
President Farmaajo informed reporters that, “only Somalis will be allowed to attend the conference. No UN. No EU. No AU. No USA and no Ethiopia. Only Somalis.”
For the first time in more than 25 years, the conference will bring together leading Somalis, from all parts of Somalia, in a major national reconciliation conference. The conference will draw all parties to discuss a peace and reconciliation plan for Somalia.
Government incompetence and corruption, Al-Shabaab atrocities, and a culture of unaccountability have enraged the Somali people to a point where they are ready to come together in a spirit of negotiation, President Farmaajo said.
President Farmaajo also noted that all Somalis recognized the need for a restructuring of the power-sharing system; the status quo has left Somalia only with violence and division.
This will be a significant step towards true peace and reconciliation in Somalia, and will also represent the first time Somali’s are coming together under a neutral banner of their own volition.
