they appear to have been destroyed at some point

Infrastructure has had several turning points throughout history. Plenty of cities look nothing like their past because of the crumbling sands of time. Countless centers faded into obscurity, while others have remnants looking nothing like their past glory.

BMAC was a whole civilization that was forgotten, then resurfaced through excavation in the 1970s by Soviet archeologists. No one knew of the Oxus Civilization before that.

Yeah the dirt on the Somali coast buries everything if it is abandoned for a while

Three Moons

Give Dhul-Suwayqatayn not an inch of the Sea!
This could have been our Conwy Castle drawing in thousands of tourists, the Somali Camelot, where King Awtur sat with his knights at the Gaashan shaped table.

No it wasn't lol
There were no Ottomans at that time. From 1842 to 1854 Berbera and Zeila were ruled by Sharmarke
Why would the Ottomans build a castle in Berbera? They did not care about Zeila and left it to the ruler of Mocha. Why did they build those castles

Maybe this account is talking about them forts?
Berbera was burned to the ground sometime in 1860-1880 that's probably when these forts disappeared.
