"Similarly, coffee was banned by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church some time before the 18th century.[19] However, in the second half of the 19th century, Ethiopian attitudes softened towards coffee drinking, and its consumption spread rapidly between 1880 and 1886; according to Richard Pankhurst, "this was largely due to Emperor Menilek, who himself drank it, and to Abuna Matewos who did much to dispel the belief of the clergy that it was a Muslim drink.

"Xabashi culture" :tacky:
It's still xabashi culture; since the days of Menelik is still a long time and undoubtedly can be called tradition. The Church is just very strict I guess, at one point they even banned music...but that's also a huge part of our culture to this day.

Sometimes you have to accept the reality, khat brings in good revenue for the government it's what 1/2 of the planes in Somalia are carrying and consumer demand is always there.

Cawaale is a legend

He brought the UK Somalis back to life.
Before the Khat ban Somalis in the U.K. We're the worst community in the U.K. They were also among the worst Somali diaspora in the world.
Unemployment was extremely high, no one used to work, everyone was on benefits. No one used to drive yet alone have cars.
Now the Somali community in the U.K. Has totally changed. Everyone works, even the old Somali ladies. Claiming benefits is looked down upon.
Most people have driving licence and drive...etc.
U.K. Somalis are doing really well.
So it's give credit to cawaale for his hard work.
