I think a lot of men forget that islamically your wives have a right to access your wealth while you don’t have the same access either. Your role is to be a breadwinner and you must spend time with your wives and finances equally among them. Not start a family and not come back for a long period of time.

I think it’s permissible to desire more wives, but you need the financial means and capability to do so to achieve that. Otherwise the sins will be on you and you’ll be asked about your negligence to you wife and kids who have completed half your deen on the day of judgement.

He might love one more than the other and Allah is stating that there is no blame in this but that he shouldn’t show this in his external treatment with regards to equal time, spending on them equally etc.
