because if you really want to go down this route, what is “genetically Somali”? That doesn’t really exist because there is no definite Somali genome.

Ethnicities are not purely defined by genetics. They are a mix of culture, language, race and ancestry.

the former 3 all being social constructs and of course ancestry does relate to genetics but even then the amount of ancestry is up for grabs.

Ethnicity, the word itself, is only purely defined in sociology and it itself is a social construct. Humans decide what is or isn’t an ethnicity and what criteria needs to be met.

To me, if you have Somali ancestry and are knowledgeable about the culture and language. You are Somali.

Yes, you are Somali if any one of your parents or grandparents is Somali. You can also be Somali if you identify as one even with 0 Somali blood quantum through effort of learning or understanding culture, language, way of life, having Somali friends you are very close with, love and respect, etc. I knew some people who loved Somalis and everything about them and it would be wrong to not let them identify with Somalis. To be Somali can be a feeling, too. Somalis identify with their clan first before Somali; Somalis only use their Somali identity during an emotional state (like against Ethiopians for example), like others who want to be Somali would in their emotional state. You can be Somali like you can be Muslim.

The opposite applies too.
