They actually did a study were they convinced a group of children they were "gifted" and as a result there test score % went through the roof in subsequent tests, they call this Pygmalion effect

Even a teacher with a high expectation of a particular student who makes it known to them, effects the students grades in a positive way, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Asian parents do this without even realizing it, but as Somali's we have a tough love approach to undermine the child that he is useless, this builds low expectations which of course reflects in the child's performance not just in school but also in life.
