Jaale Siyaad was a national hero.

Somalia was poor under barre but it was still a fairly normal country at the time
Nowadays Somalia is a fourth world confederation that can hardly even be considered an actual nation state

The comedic factor of this incident hides how serious it is.

Guys read this short article on the importance of sports in nation building so you can see what I mean:

This part in particular stood out:

After years of violent struggle, it was very difficult for many South Africans who had seen imprisonment and death from close quarters to support their predominantly white team. The sport allowed them to put the nation ahead of the race. The fact that they managed to do it successfully, consequentially enabled an inclusive atmosphere which led to social interactions within diverse groups who would otherwise never interact. Making the nation rally behind their team to celebrate their commonalities and put the differences aside was a huge victory for legendary South African President Nelson Mandela.

Captain Francois Pienaar and his boys went on to win the cup, making history and creating a perfect plot for the Hollywood blockbuster “Invictus.”

There are parts of MSB's regime that I support:
  1. Raised crop yields in the 1980s to levels that Somalia has never reached again.
  2. Built the Mogadishu-Hargaysa highway, enabling a massive increase in economic development and urbanization.
  3. Somalia was well on the way to finally harnessing the Juba river for irrigation. This task still awaits Somalia going forward, but MSB was working hard on this.
  4. He built the Garowe-Bosaso highway and the port at Bosaso, helping to jump start economic development in a region that had been ignored for over 60 years.
  5. Standardized the Somali language and helped raise literacy from ~5% to nearly 30%.
  6. Built the Kismayo-Mogadishu road and revamped Kismayo port, Berbera port & airport.

Terrible things that MSB did:
  1. Refused to hold elections in a nomadic democratic republican society, basically asking for a coup. Elections could have saved Somalia from collapse if they were held ~1980.
  2. Allowed his clan and close family access o gov coffers.
  3. Armed clans to fight each other to keep them distracted from his rule.
  4. Hindered free trade and capital accumulation stunting the country's economy. This is perhaps his worst decision.
  5. Was willing to order the killing of innocent religious & military leaders to demonstrate his power.
  6. Used indiscriminate force in suppressing the SNM and to a lesser degree the SPM, creating lasting animosities.
Tl;dr MSB did a lot of good things, but he did more bad than good. He was born in 1910 and trained in collective punishment by the Italian colonial state. He understood force & fear, but overestimated their effectiveness. He did not understand economics at all, and had a poor grasp of foreign relations. Somalia would have been much better off if Cigaal had been allowed to become president.

Forget the past, it’s done and dusted for a reason. We won’t ever accomplish anything if we don’t start an all out revolution, we the people need to be held accountable as well, we’ve been silent and watching on for way too long. This is our country let’s do something about it

Cigaal sold off Somalia’s claim on NFD to Kenya. Who knows what part of Somalia he would have sold if he became president.

What Egal did was unpatriotic and impeachable offense at the time; but looking at Somalia in the past 32 years, isn't NFD being part of Kenya a blessing-in-disguise? While Somalis in NFD always wanted to join their brethren in the Somali Republic, I honestly think being part of Kenya is much preferable to being part of a failed state of Somalia whose leaders and intellectuals allow millions of their people die in starvation, clan wars, and migration to EU through the dreaded Sahara desert.

We truly need to examine our narrow nationalism. Today, the Somali population in North East Kenya is growing to the point where in 30 years we will be the 2nd if not the largest ethnic group in Kenya. So we will be in a position to lead a nation of 70 African tribes.

Under Siad Somalia was atleast a respectable but obscure nation. We stayed under the radar and were known as the Lions of Africa. Now we are known as the Pirates of Failure.

When was Cigaal supposed to be president?
Cigaal was Prime minister at the time of the assassination of President Cabdirashid Cali Sharmake, the line of succession of president goes straight to speaker of national assembly(now peoples house), and it did, Sheikh Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein became the acting president, the only time a Raxanweyn became President of Somalia.

The speaker is a transitional president until the ruling party(SYL in this case) nominates the person who will replace the assassinated president.

Even now the speaker assumes the presidential rule as(sii haye) when the elections are happening.

The decision of who will become the next president was ultimately in SYL's hand and Muuse Boqor was their favourite.

That is correct, the SYL as the ruling party was basically cheated out of a President by the KGB soviet coup that took over Somalia.
