Why is Egypt so dysfunctional?

Egypt managed to quadruple per capita income over 5 decades despite the population being tripled without oil, it has a per capita income on par with Indonesia, and doesn't have deadweight regions like Papua to carry. It grew faster than all but 14 countries in the world from 1970-2020, so it has seen immense growth you would expect. Both Indonesia and Egypt were ruled by corrupt military dictatorships for decades too.

Why does it still have an astronomical amount of street children, poverty and overall dilapidation? Very bizarre honestly, it's no where near Iran despite it being sanctioned for decades and is lightyears behind Turkey.

This is the capital btw, it looks like Pakistan.

Contrast to Indonesia

Egypt is a great poster child for the 1 child policy. It would be very easily be a upper middle income country by now if they destroyed their fertility rates

I believe its the fact that there are all concentrated in the upper end of egypt along the nile. They don't want to move out to their vast desertlands or other parts of egypt. It's not good for development if your so concentrated on the north
