Why is Bay and Bakool regions the worst affected by droughts?

Just read a new york times article on the drought in Somalia and it was focused on refugees in baydhabo. Back in caago barar times in 1992/3, drought in 2011, 2017 and now 2021, the main focus and worst affected was drought victims from surrounding areas arriving in baydhabo. I understand the whole of Somalia is affected by drought/Abaar but it seems the mentioned gobols have it the worst. Really curious to understand why

they’re reliant on rain fed farming and don’t have a river, climate change affects them the most.
Very sad to see wallahi. I remember hearing stories that the Mogadishu - baydhabo highway was just full of dead bodies of young kids, elderly, women etc who died of starvation whilst walking from Bay to xamar. Bad time in history

They are mostly farmers and rely on agriculture as livelihood

Also they have small population in west , which means less remitannces compared to other clans like Darod who have large populations in wealthier countries and wealthier families

In my opinion the reason why the Famine is centred in Bay and Bakool/Baidoa is because Al Shabaab has sanctioned these regions really hard that they havent done for other regions. Cars havent entered cities like Waajid and Xuddur in the past 15 years. Al shabaab literally burn Gaari Dameer carrying food into Xuddur. You can also not travel from cities in Baay and Bakool due to lack of safety. Whereas cars from Xamar go to Gedo and other regions safely without Al shabaab burning them.

This makes me think that Shabaab has an agenda against Raxanweyn because they dont burn cars carrying food to regions outside Baay and Bakool. Al Shabaab also kick people out of tuulos and ask for crazy taxes.

I believe if safety issues such as Shabaab and other issues are fixed Baay and Bakool will go back to its old name of producing the most corn and cereals in Somalia. The issues in the south of famines and other problems are from lack of safety not other problems.

Yeah that would make sense. Never met a D&M in the west tbh

This may be a part of the problem but not the whole picture. Another major problem which is causing this Famine is the lack of safety and Shabaab taxing people in Baadiyo. If they dont pay the taxes they take stop the people from farming.

Another problem is these Aid NGOs that that are proffiting from the camps and corrupt politicians that fill up their pockets from these maskiins in the camps. If the people relied on their own farms these NGOs and corrupt politicians wouldnt profit from giving aid.

These IDP camps all over south Somalia need to be closed, Al Shabaab cleaned from south Somalia and IDPs need to be taken back to their Tuulos and Farms.

"Baidoa, once known as the breadbasket of Somalia, has a decades-old association with famine. The skeletal bodies of the dead littered its streets in 1992, when a third of the town’s population starved to death over three months as failed harvests combined with a raging civil war. At the peak of the famine, 15 children died every day."

I think the famine in 1992 was caused by Americans dumping grain to relieve the famine of 1991 (which took place in Shabelle region I think), this caused many farmers in Bay and bakool regions to be driven bankrupt by cheap food aid and caused a famine in that state too.

Thats actually wrong. The 1991-3 famine that caused Baidoa to be called "The city of death" With 500,000-800,000 people dying of hunger, was caused by Haraadigi Siyaad Barre stealing the Bakaars (underground food storage) as well as stopping people from farming coupled with USC stopping food aid from reaching Baidoa.

One thing your right about is when the food aid ended up reaching Baidoa for some reason the deaths ended up increasing instead of decreasing. People who were there at the time say the food was very hot and would stick in the stomachs of the people. Others say the food may have been poisened. Allah knows best.

The aid workers did not know what they were doing. They fed the starving people food that was heavy in protein.

Why is it a problem to feed a lot of protein to starving people? Because high protein food is hard to digest so the starving people are unable to absorb the food quickly enough. Protein inhibits appetite, so the starving don't eat as much as they should.
