Why don’t Somalis move to the coast ?

80% of Australians live on the coast . Why won’t Somalis leave the desert and stop dying of hunger.

Many Somali qabiils looked down on fish eaters and farmers lol. But I’m sure once we change our geeljire lifestyle exactly that will happen.

Also the North East coast is insanely hot

You need to overcome infrastructural hurdles that make life harder. But the general thing is, the long coastline doesn't all lead to the natural beaches. Most are like cliffs and shit.

Big difference, in Australia, the coast receives lots of rain etc from the prevailing winds, compared to Somalia where the coast is too hot with little agriculture and rain.

The country was never a desert to began with. If you hear stories of our parents and grand parents they will tell you it used to be lush green tropical grassland savanna with scattered trees, shrubs and teeming with wildlife. My own father told me when he was young in Hargeisa he used to see elephants, giraffes, rhinos, buffalos, lions, zebras, leopard's, cheetahs, ostriches and all kinds of antelopes. This all changed due to conflicts, overgrazing, cutting down trees for charcoal which led to the loss of wildlife, soil erosion, increased temperature, decreased rainfall, increased floods (taking the top soil and throwing it into the ocean), droughts, famine and etc. I know the situation in the south is even more severe because the Shabelle river used to reach Jilib and now I'm hearing it ends at Afgooye or Balcad. The charcoal industry in Jubbaland is crazy which is deteriorating the Northern Zanzibar–Inhambane coastal forest mosaic. I heard Gedo region used to have high rainfall but because of loss of many trees and overgrazing, the rainfall has gone through a drastic decrease and transformed Gedo into becoming the hottest region in Somalia even surpassing the Bari region.

Instead of pursuing people to all move to the coastlines. How about we encourage strong education to the rural communities who are mostly effected with hunger and drought? Encourage them to plant more trees, increase a sense of love with the environment, practise rotional grazing to regenerate damaged grasslands, encourage them to farm, store rainwater in the times of rainy seasons, protect the loss of wild life and discourage poaching and cutting down trees for charcoal. We could restore the lost flourishing eco-system we once had and maybe one day we will have tourists to visit our newly created national parks, inshallah and promote food self-sufficiency. No more importing food from other countries and change the perceive image that our interior is some desert when historically it never was.

This explains why Somali “Madow” (I don’t like to use that word) don’t die of hunger ( at Least not as common because they usually live near the rivers/ocean.

Bruh,we somalis are plain ignorant on the benefits of fish, I remember when southerns fled to us in Bari and PL they used to hold their nose in disgust when passing by fish frying stalls in the market, they used to calls us "Reer Bari" "Indho Fish" and all kind of degrading names because we were consuming the fish more than livestock.

Little did they know that eating fish makes you look younger and help you with your sight, now these same people fjidf realizes that Reer Bari people live the longest among somalis and have life expectancy longer than any other regions within Somalia, so I say, let them eat the goats and camels and we will enjoy our fish undisturbed.

Is fish stigmatization an actual thing in Somalia? Asked my hooyo and she said people would eat fish all the time in xamar during the 80s, maybe it's different in the mainland

I can’t speak for everyone but where I’m from in Galgaduud fish eaters used to be very looked down upon.

Somalia has one of the lowest rates of fish consumption despite our massive coastline.

Unfortunately due to room temperature IQ Most somalis look down on fish or seafood .
What I like to see in south Somalia is for cities like janaale , afgooye ,mareerey, balcad ,jowhar , qoryoole ect population move to the coast and let those very fertile lands be used just for farming .

There need to be an organization whose purpose is to re-educate Somali people and make an overhaul of Somali culture that put us in such situation that does not allow us to prosper and move forward; Such examples can be found in Qabil, Nomad lifestyle, lack of strong literacy, the taboo of seafood consumption, and worst of all, dependence of other countries that do not have honest interests on the subject of developing Somalia.

Should there be an organization for it, I hopefully intend to lead it, for I have hatred for Qabil wars.:fittytousand:

You are a smart young lady and you are asking extremely important and uncomfortable questions. You should continue to be a curious person and seek answers, that's all I will say.

The north west is hot not the north east.
Bosaso is mild compared to Berbera and saylac.
Xaafuun is cooler than xamar.
