Why do Somali limit themselves economically to the Gulf?

While our biggest export product is livestock we only seem to export to Gulf which is close and quick to export to but it has the side effect of making us overly dependent on them and giving them to big of a sway on our country like with the Iran situation and considering that if we broaden our horizon we can find a far bigger consumer base in Asia while at the same time diversifying our customer base.

Currently we export primarily to the gulf which has a combined population of 50 million while countries like Pakistan Indonesia and Malaysia have gigantic muslim population that dwarves ME, add to that the arabian muslim countries like Algeria and morocco which we also dont sell to.

my quesion is why hasnt a somali leader tried getting rid of this economic dependency by diversifying to other muslim countries?

Somalia is weak in real political terms and as a fragile state and therefore doesn't have room to offend any allies or perceived allies.

Most modern state have diversified economies due to prolong stability and credible institutions in case of disagreement. Somalia doesn't have that and as such is relying on former economical and to some extent culturally bonds it has the with the Gulf, and it relative close geography makes it profitable for the small scale somali businesses.

We need credible court systems to reign in corruption and a executive that enforces the laws passed by a dually elected legislature.

I imagine due to proximity, established connections and closer ties. We have a very primitive economy. Instead of only diversifying trade partners, we could actually produce something other than livestock.

Why limit your self to Muslim countries? Why go as far as Asia when you can trade with other African countries?

I'm pretty sure Ethiopia being a mostly non-Muslim country is not the reason we don't trade livestock. Is there even as much of a demand to import that much livestock?

While i do agree that we should have as many economical relations as possible having either kenya or ethiopia be part of our trade route will open up a whole different can of worms.

Politics aside. Somalia should take advantage of it's neogbhors. With our proximity and large population we can be a good market for somalia.

Me and you should become Presidents of our land

You will make a brilliant business partner. Come here, sister.

Agree with you 100% but i am talking about resolving our short term problem.

We actually export a lot of livestock but you guys should have cornered the market on fish in Ethiopia. There is so much potential for you guys. It's a product Ethiopia has a hard time get so..

Why pay for the milk, when the cow is free...

South Korean, Indian, Yemen, Norwegian, fishing boats, you name it, are stealing and fishing illegally in our waters..... let's tackle that first instead of sending goats to India or wherever ...:mjlol:

This is depressing. 81.9% of our exports is consists of live animals. We are geeljires through and through. We don't even process it. I know the overwhelming number of African countries have very simple exports making it fragile. I don't know if there would be political barriers and leveraging in place to stop it, but we really need to do something about it. We should at the very least export processed meats. Anything from preserved products, sandwich meats, stock, animal food etc. This would allow us to export world wide. The more complicated an export, the better it is. The more jobs and opportunities to capitalise on it. Instead of exporting the raw product and allowing others to do whatever they do it with, we should do it domestically. Not to mention we have the whole halal niche going.

If you were head of patrolling the Somali waters, how would you stop these nation states from coming to our waters?

How much would you tell the Somali government to invest in your works of stopping these countries from coming to our waters?

If your mission of stopping these rodents in our waters work, would you still want the Somali government to trade with these countries?

Yes, once we have competent leadership this should and hopefully will be one of the first (and easiest) resources to capitalise on. The fact that we have a 100m+ landlocked neighbor is already one easy market.

We could make bank from our fisheries & seafood sector if we invest & develop it, since we already have a 100 million strong market next door that's landlocked.

First we need to stop relying of these Arab countries. 90% of the imports for Somalia comes from Dubai. We are the second biggest customer after Iran a country with 80 million.
We should build closer ties with India, Pakistan, china, Thailand, Indonesia...

As they say beggars can't be choosers

Good question ......

First and foremost, the illegal waste dumping of toxic and nuclear waste will have to be the main issue to be tackled.

I will recruit and buy patrolling boats, provide them intensive training. Ex Somali pirates Will be welcome as they were a Great source of deterrent albeit
For their own financial gain but None the less.

I will personally head a task force,
Ensuring no minister is stealing
Or accepting bribes or using government money for themselves, use this money to
Pay the coast guards wages.

I will inform any forerign western government, if any illegal shipping or otherwise boat invades Somali sea territory they will be dealt with accordingly. Forceably follow and guide them out, with a loaded gun.. just how the EU do with the Russains lol

All boats shall have them....
