Why do so many Djiboutians deny their Somali identity?

I see many of them, either IRL or interacting with them on the networks, saying they are Djiboutians and not Somalis. Most even say they're just Cissé.
Why do they act like this

That's sad to deny your ethnicity I get them saying they're Djiboutian but denying your ethnicity is an extreme form of self hate and that's worrying. The media does a good job in creating self haters

how can they deny being somali? I get saying your not from somalia but djboutti but impossible for them to not say somali.

I know a couple of girls like this, does anyone know why they deny their somalinimo? I understand the ones on social media because they don't want to be harrassed by the incels especially if they don't wear the hijab but what about those that behave like this in real life?

The media has done so much damage to the perception of Somalia not to mention Somalia being a failed nation they most likely don't want to associate with the somali name because of that, another reason is so they can be seen as "exotic" and different. This is more of a uk thing.

They are djiboutians that’s their nationality and their clan Ciise, since they dont have any land in the current border of Somalia i do understand the few people of them not claiming Somalia in a sense. But the ones ive met older ones atleast aint any different to other Somalis, you might mean the younger ones who might be embarassed?

I'm confused, do they deny being Somali or being from the state Somalia? I've encountered many Cisse, and they never deny being Somali because it's impossible.

Idk never asked the older ones they tend to be around other Somalis so dont think they see themself as anything else, but the younger ones in diaspora prolly might be another case.

However it’s a tricky one tbh. Since they dont reside in Somalia, got their own nationality and us ” Somalis ” identify with our tool over the concept of Somaliniimo i wouldnt blame them not claiming Somali.

European countries have similar gentics, for example in Switzerland there are Germans and French people but they still call identify as Swiss. So maybe that is the case with Djiboutians. Djiboutians also have different cultural practices than traditional Somalis from the south at this point, so I don’t see what the issue is.

Typical Somali with 0 self awareness & 0 critical thinking skill .

Somalis are last ones who should accuse Djiboutians of being selfhater & claiming a different identity.

bruh somalis in djboutti and south or north or ogaden or nfd are just same mfs, to a point you cannot even deny not being each other or the same. Its blessing and something to be proud of.

We stand as the only ethnic group in the entire African continent unified by a single language, culture, and religion, with a nation built around our ethnicity. Moreover, we occupy the largest territory for a single tribe on the continent.

The question arises: Why were we subjected to division, separation, and fragmentation

The historical ambitions of uniting Somalis into Greater Somalia faced opposition from the French and British powers. Benito Mussolini, under fascism, aimed for this unity before his downfall. The British handed over Ogaden and NFD to Ethiopia and Kenya, respectively. The French obstructed Djibouti from joining Somalia; they manipulated votes and encouraged the influx of Afars to prevent unification

I’ve never encountered this I’ve met a few reer Djibouti folks at work etc and we spoke Somali. In any case I don’t think it’s wrong for them to identify as Djiboutian with all the clan enclaves rocking their own flag lol. Good people tho I hope we can unite one day.

I’m just stating what a Djiboutian person told me, she said they have different culture. In all honesty I think it has to do with not wanting to associate with a failed state because another girl I know would claim Djibouti and Ethiopia because people would bully her and call her a Somali poor refugee at school so she had no sense of pride especially because she grew up with foster parents

I think it has to do with bullying tbh Somalia is very demonized in Western media mainly because we are black, Muslim and refugees. Hopefully that changes soon

They got xooged the hardest out of any colonial land in greater Somalia. Even though siad barre through his efforts managed to get them their own sovereignty, the damage was already done by the French and they lost their identity with it.

They don’t even have Somali as an official language. They’re miskeen.

The Ciise clan have many characters that distinguish them from the mainstream Somali clans to the point that if you meet them and see their shapes you will think they are Danakils. So their claims are not far-fetched. Let them claim Djiboutian.
