Why did Somali scholars historically only write books in Arabic?

I get that most of them were living in Egypt like Fakhr al-Din al-Zayla'i, but why didn't they make a Somali translation as well?
Because somali wasn't a litteraly language and the somali adaptation of the arabic alphabet wasn't developed enough.
It's similar to what happened in some parts of Europe, in the early middle ages most europeans wrote official texts, treaties, religious books etc only in Latin or Greek, local languages were used from time to time and replaced latin only in the late middle ages/ renaissance
