Why diaspora Somali youth can’t speak Somali

So I have been doing a mini research on why Somali diaspora youth can’t speak Somali despite their age arab/Kurd speak fluently.

my research is not fully concluded but I can already see a pattern on why they fail. myself as a trilingual I can confirm the following after lengthy study, interviews and follow ups:

1: majority of the youth I encounted can’t speak one language fluently even in the host countries they were born/raised in. They might not have accents like an immigrant but they have very limited vocabulary and majority could hardly write an essay of more than 2 pages. Now it is scientifically proven that having a solid first language helps your ability of learning.

2. A substantial number of them have not gone beyond high school and for those who have gone to high school 1/3 have failed to finish with required points. So education plays a major role here.

Now I’m can’t say this is outright wrong, but where did you get these stats from? :mjlol:

The second point is completely baseless in my opinion. The first might have some merit to an extent.

I have done it myself through a project connect to my former uni... majority of the participants were Somali youth between 14-25 years in Oslo, Gothenburg, Copenhagen and Stockholm
So we could say that’s these results are only applicable to youth from those cities, right?

For now yes but I won’t be surprised extending to others also... for instance in uk and even North America they hardly speak proper English but more like street slang or at best furbished street slang

Idk a lot of these kids just pick up words from popular- or madow culture.

I can say for US, and Canada as well, a good amount of these kids will use madow lingo but actually are bright individuals.

Maybe the case is the same in UK and the others.

I have a theory

Arab parents speaking arabic and kids respond back in Arabic

Somali parents speaking Somali and kids respond back in a mix of somali and Swedish if they live there

Also think about it Arabs got shows movies in Arabic

what do we have silly indian movies dubbed in somali

Well either it is the parents don't care ( which i don't believe it most somali parents do care about their language ) or the person don't want to learn af somali bc they are start with S ends with ing.
