Why are some people against the oficial publishing and institutionalising of the Maay language?

I've seen many Somali people that are hell bent and against the writing and documenting of the Maay language. They claim that it will cause the division of the somali people and will lead to the destruction of Somalia. I've never understood these people's fears of the Maay language.

I personally see the documentation and institutionalisation of Af Maay to be beneficial to both Reer SWS and somaliweyn. Many want to learn Af Maay and this will help. This will also help the Maay speakers that have been marginalised for the past 60 years.

Many people pray for the Af Maay language to become extinct and wish it were wiped of the face of the earth. They believe Somalia has 1 language and only that language should be spoken.

I really want to hear people's reasonings and thoughts on this topic.

I personally prefer one somali language but I'm not against afmaay let those who want to learn it in schools learn it

No point worrying about this tbh, they don't have any impact or influence, let them die in their range once their grandchildren start speaking to them in Af Maay

Good for reer KG, I have no issue with it personally. I guess it could be another problem in the zoo. What would stop future separatist movement in KG by claiming they speak a different language and are under discrimination by the dominant maxa tiri speakers. It's possible in the zoo.

Somalia is already the most divided country in the world.

Stopping people from speaking and using their language is just immoral.

In reality its basically impossible. Somaliland have been trying to seccede for 30 years and have failed terribly. What would make us different.

Also we are surrounded by other tribes on all sides. We couldnt seperate even if we wanted to.

I personally don't agree with seperatism and it's ideology. Id much rather just build the reer sws people untill they one day dominate the rest of Somalis.

That's my mindset. It just causes more cuqdad and division. These people think it will unite Somalis but it's actually the opposite.

In theory, I do agree it’s not in the best interest of a government to promote other languages.

But Somalia is a unique case. If we ever unite and put our differences aside, that will be a miracle. So who cares if some region wants to speak their own branch of the Somaloid language. It’s not even 0.1 % of our issues.

You have the correct mindset🙌🙌

What will most likely happen is that with the dominance of maxaa tiri in education, media, and common-Somali culture, Af Maay will slowly get wiped out naturally. A bit like how many Okinawans speak Modern Japanese rather than their Okinawan dialect. Just as demography is destiny so is the change of languages and dialects over time

Isn't Af-Maay simply a dialect of Somali. I mean it's somewhat understandable outside of the odd word here and there. Personally I don't think it's a issue, let people learn the language.

My brother you guys are fighting your shadows. Those who know of you and are against afkaaga are ignorant but few. We out here fighting for our survival, and you're talking about wax loo joogin.

We are also fighting for our survival. Our existence and Maay people depends on our language.

If our language goes extinct then we shall also go extinct. We are fighting different battles but the same war.

Afmaay and Afbanadrii is what Somalia about. We should give equal right for all Somalis.
