I've been reading this articles and it talks about how Syrians hate both foreign and native darker-skinned/black people, and how their women stay out of the sun so that they don't get darker (black). Being a light-skin means a straight elite in Syrian culture for both men and women.
In Somali culture on the other hand, it doesn't matter whether you're light-skinned or not as long as you're of the 4 big clans, your privilege and favorability depends on the status of your clan, but being a light-skin woman corresponds to more attention but there's no thing as ''I need a light-skin wife/husband'' in our society. One good example is how a Somali person (man/woman) would be with an ok-looking partner than having an Eeleey, a Shaashi or a Benaadiri partner (remnants of Portugal/Arabs/Italy/France etc). They're not favored for being white/light-skin mixed people but they're not attention seekers either and marry their own.
But unlike other cultures, the darkest one of our girls doesn't have to worry about finding a husband just because she's darker than the standard. She might be seen as a ''SOMALI ASAL af-ku-dhuxulley''.
Facial features and clan status matter more than the skin color in our culture.
Do you think light-skin people are favored in Somali culture?.
And what makes other cultures stigmatize dark skin?.
Is really being dark/brown/black naturally and inherently bad and ugly or is it just a social construct?.
Can the roles be flipped and black be decorated as the ''GLAMOROUS color''?.
Have you ever seen a culture that prioritizes dark-skin over light-skin?.
Indians, South Asians, Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Latinos, Arabs etc, these societies are the worst. Being dark-skinned means death sentence in India and Latin-America for instance.

Every society has its own problem, ours is tribalism like how Madhibaans, Eeleys and Madows are treated but I think the color obsession is worse, Agree?. But nonetheless we still have to fight the Qabyaalad!

The Unbearable Affront of Colorism
Banah al Ghadbanah on the scourge of racism/colorism in Syrian communities and how it is tied to centuries-old endemic anti-Blackness and internalized colonialism.
