Who are we?

I've seen loads of stuff on here denigrating our people and people suffering from an inferiority complex.

So, in the spirit of learning and positivity, I'd like to start this discussion.

Every nation has its good and bad and I think it would be best to remind each other of the heritage our ancestors bequeathed to us.

What are our cardinal virtues? What positive aspects of our culture make us distinct from other peoples?
What cool customs are unique to us?

Every culture has an essence which pervades it. What is the essence of Somalinimo?

I would begin with the glorious legacy of our Islamic scholars, the intense love of religion which lead our ancestors to defend it against all foes, our poetical tradition, our facility with business and the Xeer legal system*.

Merchant of Mogadishu

From Pella to Pattala, then back to Babylon
I would also say the spirit of mercantilism is part of the essence of Somalinimo, look at our maritime history. We were great shipbuilders, sailors and traders. Our merchants went to far places, across many seas and many lands to engage in fruitful trade. That is still within us.

I didn't mean it like that. I do think good knoknowledof your heritage is impoimpor for everyone though.

Just thought it would be cool to hhav a cultural thread. There's so much regional diversity within Somalia (all the Somali territories). For example I was struck by the age-grades of the Raxanweyn and other clans in the agricultural inter-riverine regions.
