Maal means both wealth and milk, which makes sense in a language from a nomadic culture, but there's evidence it also meant livelihood in old Somali, as evidenced from other clan names like Biyomaal (water-livelihood). The original name could have been something like "travel-livelihood", something like "nomad".

Soomaali is therefore "the Nomad"
