What period of Somali history would make a great historical epic?

Just a fun thought I had. I like watching historical epics and if Somalis had an actual film industry, I'm sure we would have some great material. What period of Somali history do you think would lend well to an epic?

Personally, I think Ahmad Gurey and Somali vs Portuguese would be interesting. Meeting the Chinese Muslim expedition of Zheng He? Sailing on the seas?

Thoughts? I think even more obscure historical events could be interesting.

Rise of Ifat
Adal-Abyssina war
Gaal-Madow wars
Ajuran-Portuguese wars
Campaign against the sultanates
Dervish movement

Probably few others I'm missing

Majeerteenia alone could be a tv show, the amount of drama and wars from the 1800s alone is crazy;

1. Haji Ali Majerteen on a jihad to South Somalia vs Geledi Sultanate
2. Suldaan Keenadiid expanding into South Mudug and Galgaduud
3. Majerteenia Kingdom vs Suldaan Keenadiid
4. Majerteenia sending weapons and threatening to attack Harar- nearly causing another Futuh Al Habesha.
5. Majerteenia invited to invade Berbera by one Isaaq clan, to uproot another Isaaq clan.
6. The wars against Italy.

etc, etc,

Northern Swordsman

Tawxiid Alle lahaw, Talo na Alle saaro.
Definitely Adal and Ajuran era.

β€’ religion thrived / somali scholars across the world eg. Azhar etc emerging and traveling the Muslim and non Muslim lands
β€’ commerce thrived / Egypt, Venice, China, India
β€’ cultural exchange thrived /arab, persian, Indian, bantu, East Asians

Very interesting, I will explore some of these events further. Thanks! You're right that we have a lot of great history to draw from.

Futuh al habesh is the first that comes to mind. Large scale, involves a lot of different clans/ Muslim groups, historically and culturally relevant.

The life of a young Somali nomad would honestly make a great adventure film, not really a "historical epic" but the lifestyle was a daring one. Duels, clan wars, walking to as far as your legs could take you ( a horse if you had that kind of money), a sense of independence and self reliance. Throw in some mythical creatures and you got yourself a thrilling story.

That idea about the nomad sounds dope, it has The Odyssey vibes. You should actually write that. I haven't seen anyone do a good African historical fantasy. A lot of Asian films have this element, combining some sort of history with mythology (dragons, vampires, etc).

A hero's journey always makes a good story, in different cultures, different times, one of those things anime got right. Africa has so many stories that haven't been explored - people need to get on that.
