that's what I used to think too until I saw Amhara vs Tigray doing fadhi ku dirir. Apparently, Tigrays have being called habesh, they will tell "we are not habesh"! I think the term better describes the Amharas only.Habesha are the semitic speaking inhabitants of the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea, such as the Amhara, Tigray, Tigrinya, etc. Not all Ethiopians are Habesha, only the semitic speaking ones. Oromos aren't Habesha, for example. Since the Habesha dominate Ethiopia, some people just use the word to refer to Ethiopians in general.
Not true at all, all Tigrayans claim Habesha and Tigrinya speakers were the first people to call themselves Habesha, Amhara people adopted the term later, many Tigrinya speakers historically never considered Amhara to be HabeshaApparently, Tigrays have being called habesh, they will tell "we are not habesh"! I think the term better describes the Amharas only.
Like who are they. Is it just another way of saying ethiopian
