No hate to the nomadic way of life and people that live it but most Somalis have moved to the towns and for good reason. For one many have either stopped being herders and became farmers or wage-laborers, which by definition require being in a fixed location- and is most effectively done in or near a town.

Also even the people who have herds are bolting themselves down OR tightening the areas they move about due to greater market access in bigger towns (this is mainly a phenomenon near really big water sources like the Juba and Shebelle river as well as the many small rivers in Waqooyi Galbeed/SL).


Not even the destruction of the 90s changed the trend much!

The UN does not recognize somaliland, and recognizes the territorial integrity of Somalia- thus all aid reductions to Somalia also mean an aid reduction to the self-declared republic of somaliland.

I don’t think you really understand. Not all aid goes through the UN, especially food aid. Somaliland recently got some shoes from Taiwan.

1) The govt does not faithfully represent the people, if they did they would have cleaned up the criminal checkpoints yesterday

2) Aid providers give grain and rice, but do not hand out tractors and harvesters. Comrade Sankara famously talked about the same concerns you have right now- that they (the west) mindlessly sends food aid instead of actually helping develop the agricultural sector because that reduces the influence they have.
