we need an english learning app for somalis

Some family members want to learn english but the resources out there for a somali speaker aren't adequate (unless i'm unaware of something out there)

How do you teach elder family members English?

Are you talking about adeer's and eedo's in the diaspora or back home?

In my case, I have endeavoured to teach some adeers English plenty of time, trying to make it as easy and palatable as possible. At some point I had to come to the conclusion they are just bone headed nacas. After 30 years amongst the natives, if you are struggling, then maybe you just dont want to.

You're a being a bit too judgemental, it's hard for some that just mingle with their own ethnicity the entire time they're in the west. It's also difficult because they got kids to take care of so finding the time to learn isn't easy. Not to mention the lack of resources for Somali speakers trying to learn english. All in all I try not to judge.

I could share some resources that I came across at the time I was researching this matter but I wont, on the ofchance of them being dated.

One of the advices that was constant then and even I have across in my attempt to learn relearn Somali is take advantage of a population that speaks the language.

Just putting your English to work in every day scenarios like at the cashier or a local café or a restaurant. Just avoid being amongst the same circles, like Somali coffee houses etc etc.

Considering is English a lingua franca English I am sure there are amazing recent applications out there purpose built for it.

My issue is that these apps usually require you to know a more common langauge before you can learn english. Since Somali isn't a common language.

Apps are a waste of time only useful to teach you the absolute basics. I'd recommend a book called "English by the nature method". A sort of massive compilation of graded readers. The story starts with super basic vocab and progressively becomes complex. You don't need any background in English to start. There's an audio book playlist in YouTube. The author Arthur Jensen has made Italian, French and Spanish versions using the same method. I'm reading the French one now. Comprehensible input with the least amount of grammar study possible is the ONLY way to learn a language
