For the second time in a week the Washington Post attempts to "save" Somalia, except it gets it all wrong.
Three key misconceptions in the article:
1) US neglect is causing the war against AlShabaab to fail when in reality it is Somalia's dysfunctional elites.
2) The real reason for the funding cut to Danab
3) That the US is even abadoning Somalia when they have only threatened to veto further UN funds going towards AUSSOM. The EU which used to cover the stipends of AU troops could be argued to have pulled back the most. The AU's contributions have also been very limited.
America never seems to get Somalia right. For decades, U.S. relations with the impoverished, strategically located country on the Horn of Africa have followed a pattern: cycles of robust intervention followed by neglect. During times of neglect, violence and terrorism take root and threaten the stability of the entire region. And the United States is forced to return.
Once again, America is moving toward neglect of Somalia, and it could prove dangerous for both the region and U.S. interests.
In Somalia, the United States is not being forced out. It is leaving only in service to new White House priorities. This year, as part of Trump’s global freeze on foreign assistance, the United States cut funding for the Somali National Army’s elite special forces unit known as the Danab, or “lightning,” brigade. Danab had been the Somali government’s most effective force against al-Shabab, al-Qaeda’s most lethal affiliate. Without the $1.5 Billion dollars a year it used to receive from the United States, the cash-strapped Somali government is scrambling to pay the Danab fighters’ salaries. U.S. financial support for a U.N. African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia also is being cut. global freeze on foreign assistance
