This is very good news for Somalia. FGS single tariff policy will be needed, something that we haven’t been able to manage yet. EAC will force many reforms on us that will reduce trade barriers within Somalia and EAC more widely.

Can someone give us the pros and cons of Somalia joining the Eac
cons are many, one is that EAC court is the supreme court that adjudicate legal disputes between its member states. Each member state acknowledges the courts decisions as valid. Which means that Kenya can have a case against Somalia in that corrupt court and win. Nullifying ICJ's decision.

I’ve come to realise, Somalia joining this block will completely destroy our sovereignty. What’s remaining of it that is. I hope this decision is reversed.

Somalia today is not ready to join until South Somalia became stable. HAG enough mocking on Somalia name, first fix your home.

What do you have to offer other than being the recipient of cheap goods?
Having cheap goods is beneficial too. We suffer from high construction costs that holds back our development.

But we have a livestock industry and blue economy that can benefit from this. As well as multiple ports that can bring in goods for landlocked EAC countries.

In future we will become the energy hub for this bloc once we start producing oil. So at the least we’ll have this to offer.

The most important EAC offers is confidence to foreign investors, Somalia’s legal system is non-existent but soon that will be improved with EAC court having supremacy over Somalia. We’ll be forced to copy legislation that protects property, land and private companies. And even if we don’t implement this, companies can go to the EAC

So you want cheap consumer goods before you can even build a manufacturing sector?

To produce anything we need low production cost.

We can use state investment to increase our competitiveness eventually. For now however we have high energy, high raw material costs for example, which is holding back our growth.
