He is Mabrouk a slave child in Mogadishu, he was redeemed and adopted by Italian Explorer Luigi Robecchi Bricchetti.

There is no choice now though, that is the difference, no point risking being blown up by Alshabab, and there are plenty of pictures of women not wearing hijab back then too.
