@lil boss

Turkey?

The last major opponent of China's Muslim oppression has retreated into silence. Here's why that's a big deal.

  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently said that Uighurs – the Muslim ethnic minority under oppression by the Chinese government – actually lead happy lives in China, Chinese state-media reported.
  • This apparent capitulation is particularly significant because Turkey, until now, had been the only Muslim country to stand up against China for the Uighurs.
  • Turkey is also home to hundreds of thousands of Uighurs. Many of them already live in limbo without work permits or legal residency, and unable to return to China.
  • The reason behind Erdogan’s about-face is not clear. He has, however, been trying to strike greater economic partnerships with Beijing.
  • Turkey – whose currency collapsed, and whose economy went into recession last year – has grown increasingly reliant on Chinese economic aid in recent years.

It is only the Western world who are condemning the treatment of Uighurs.

Australia's foreign minister labels China's treatment of Uighurs 'disturbing'

Marise Payne repeats calls for China to end arbitrary detention after internal documents reveal Xi Jinping’s call to ‘show no mercy’ in Xinjiang.

Australia’s foreign affairs minister, Marise Payne, has called for China to halt the arbitrary detention of Uighurs in Xinjiang.

Australia’s foreign affairs minister has labelled new details of China’s mass internment of Uighurs “disturbing” and reiterated demands for China to end arbitrary detention.

Marise Payne made the statement in response to internal Chinese government documents showing its mass detention of Uighurs and other minorities in Xinjiang came from directives by Xi Jinping to “show absolutely no mercy” in the “struggle against terrorism, infiltration and separatism”.

On Monday Scott Morrison (Australian Prime Minister) also branded it “very disappointing” that two Liberal MPs were blocked from China and confirmed a human rights program with China has been discontinued.
