UNSC Council meeting on Arms Embargo Thread

On Tuesday (14 November), the Security Council will hold its annual briefing with the heads of police components of UN peace operations. The expected briefers are Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar, Police Commissioner of the UNMultidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) Christophe Bizimungu, Police Commissioner of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Christine Fossen, and Executive Director of SecurityCouncil Report Karin Landgren.

Also on Tuesday, Council members are expected to vote on three draft resolutions. One resolution renews the 2140 Yemen sanctions regime for 12 months. The draft resolution, which is a straightforward renewal of the sanctions measures, was put in blue on 9 November. The second draft resolution renews the 751 Al-Shabaab sanctions regime and the mandate of its Panel of Experts. The third draft text renews the mandate of the UNInterim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and extends the mission’s support for the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JBVMM). The draft resolution, which is a straightforward renewal of UNISFA’s mandate, was put in blue on 9 November.

UNSC arms embargo will not be lifted this year.

The sun will expand and become a white dwarf, we will then see the heat death of the universe before the arms embargo is lifted.

Only kids and Hagitedamus Bidenkulaha ever believed this. It ain't going to happen anytime soon.

They have a hard time coming to terms with reality. It doesn’t matter how vocal IC are about the unfulfilled conditions, there’re always going to be people that are convinced about otherwise. I wonder what their next prediction will be kkk :silanyolaugh:

Isn’t this just gonna push Somalia more into China’s arms? I thought the USA was for Somalia because they got practically kicked out of almost everywhere else in Africa @Three Moons @mohammdov

Then shouldn’t they have taken off the embargo so that can happen?
Somali Army can still get weapons from partners but sometimes those weapons and vehicles end up in Shabaab hands. Which is what the UNSC doesn’t want.

There is already enough weapons in Somalia for that to happen.

^^This^^

I'm both frustrated by the ongoing embargo but I understand it. Until the SFG take out any shabaab moles and sympathizers we cannot tmbe sure where weapons end up. We've made progress curbing the khwarajis bandits militarily but we need to destroy them economically. Afghanistan fell because 1) the numbers of army personnel were highly inflated and 2) high quality military equipment ended up being sold on the black market to the Taliban. The international community cannot allow that to happen again.

Embargo will probably be lifted when shabaab are pushed to a tiny area and are cut off from any form of support.

This will never happen, let's be real
Why should wavering clans back a government that can’t import arms?

The fact is that there is no other option for the Somali government besides the arms embargo being lifted, the current Anti-AS offensive relied on 1. a maciweesley rebellion 2. Arms embargo being lifted so that clans on the fence are scared into backing the FGS.

this is horrible for the current admin, and horrible also for the stability of south Somalia.

Somalia could bypass the arms-embargo with a single agreement with Turkey. The latter establishes an affiliated weapons factory next to Camp TURKSOM that produces tanks, drones, APCs, helicopters and other hardware for the Somali military, and in turn the Turks get to initiate a rare Earth mineral mining project in the Central regions of the country through a 50/50 venture.

The embargo wouldn’t be violated, because nothing is imported.

The Security Council doesn’t take this current government serious the way it did the previous one, which had a decent Somali Security Plan and roadmap. You can’t ask the UN to halt troop withdrawals because you aren’t ready to take over, and then complain that they also don’t consider you ready for a total lifting of sanctions.

More on this mining project? I never heard of it, I thought Turkey just wanted more influence in Africa through us being stable and reliable ally in the East/Horn Africa.

You’re talking about the ICU right? Was this government better than the one we currently have?

Other frontier destinations including Mozambique, Tanzania and Namibia are all vying to attract foreign companies – mainly from Canada and Australia. In Somalia, the sand dunes bordering the Indian Ocean are amongst the areas thought to hold potential for rare earth mining and Turkey, one of its key donors, is showing a keen interest.

No. I’m talking about the Farmaajo administration and General Odowa’s Security Transition Plan. As for the latter part of your post; research that period in time and come to your own conclusion on whether the previous admin was better or not.
