It’s ridiculous. I tell my parents they are being selfish if they expect me to only marry who they want me to marry. I try to explain to them how oppressive they are being and that at the end of the day I’m the one spending the rest of my life with this person. Mental health is no joke and I think it’s extremely selfish of him to ruin his daughter’s engagement with his suicide and make her believe that it was her fault. Mental health is no joke but people need to seek help instead of destroying the lives of the people around them.

Untreated mental health is destructive to everyone around that person ...so if the mentally ill person refuses to get help for themselves ...they should try getting help so they don’t destroy the lives of their family members, loved ones and friends.

Unless of course you’re young and making a rash decision your parents shouldn’t control who you spend your life with. If you’re mature enough and you decide you want to be with someone your parents should be supportive unless they see something in the person you can’t.

We all value our parents opinions, but he is from so and so isn’t a good enough reason to refuse.
