Nothing new Tunisia has always been a secular country just not in name. Read about Bourghiba

I know about him... but them removing Islam from the constitution implies it was there in the first place, so they're going in a way that's even more unislamic than status quo... I'm not sure who put Islam in the constitution to begin with, I'd be surprised if Bourgiba did it but I don't know either way

that's what I figure.... but maybe he would have done it just to fake like he was pious.... you know like a lot of times you have hardcore munafiqeen who still pretend to be Muslim occasionally for... whatever reason... ok let me ask chatgpt and figure out who put it there

ok this is what chatgpt says, you're right it wasn't the first guy, I thought maybe the first guy did it to fake being pious

Islam has been an integral part of Tunisia's identity for centuries. However, the specific inclusion of Islam in the Tunisian constitution can be attributed to the Ennahda Party, which played a significant role in the drafting and ratification of the new constitution in 2014.

The Ennahda Party, an Islamist political party, has been a key player in Tunisian politics since the country's revolution in 2011. In the aftermath of the revolution, Tunisia embarked on a historic process of democratization, leading to the drafting of a new constitution that aimed to enshrine principles of pluralism, freedom, and equality.

In negotiations and discussions surrounding the constitution, the Ennahda Party advocated for the explicit recognition of Islam as the state religion, a provision that was ultimately included in the final text of the constitution. This recognition of Islam in the constitution affirmed Tunisia's historic and cultural ties to the religion while also acknowledging the importance of religious freedom and tolerance.

It is important to note that the inclusion of Islam in Tunisia's constitution was a result of political negotiations and compromise among various political parties and stakeholders. It reflects Tunisia's commitment to balancing the principles of democracy and religious identity in a manner that respects the diversity and pluralism of its society."

I looked up the 1959 constitution, and apparently it included Islam as the state religion. I guess Bourghiba included that in there to avoid too much backlash

It's inevitable. Might as well make the state secular if you're not going to actually enforce religious law

Tunisians are Turkish & Albanian level type of Sakhraamiin. It is very rare to find a normal Tunisian Muslim. This is complete opposite compared to their neighbours of Algeria & Libya.

When I went to Tunisia, the hotel I was staying at kicked me out the pool because I had my awrah covered. I’m not shocked at all by this.

I watched a BBC Arabic documentary where something similar happens in Egypt. Even high-end restaurants wouldn’t allow hijab wearing women to enter.
