If they went to a border post, they would be sent back to the U.S because of the safe third country arrangement.

They can at the border crossing but its much more complicated. The idea is if you turn yourself in on Canadian soil then you have a higher chance of having your asylum application accepted.

At the border crossing their port of entry would be the US, and they will be taken into custody and then detention. It's much easier to enter Canada through the woods than an official border because their port of entry will not be known, they will be in Canadian soil. They will still be taken into detention though.
