Actually no, that’s not why they are banned whatsoever, they aren’t even banned.
No animal is banned Islamically, they are allah swt creation. You can even have a pig as a pet. A dog can be a pet, but there are some rules, like can’t live in the family house and washing your hands if you touch it’s saliva.

The idea that dogs are “haram” or “dirty” in Islam is something that came hundreds of years after Muhammed saw. If you own a dog or any animal, aside for consumption like, cattel, you must treat it well and treat it like family. If you own a dog you must treat it like they were meant to be, a domestic animal, go own walks, play with it etc.
I can even give you hadith to back me up, but you want find hadith/quran to back up the wide spread claim that dogs are “haram” or “dirty”. The majority of sahaba owned dogs, though it was for protection, islamically they were treated like pets that lived outside the family home.

EDIT: even if it’s for consumption, you must treat the animals well too.

If for some reason you must get a pet, just get a cat or any other non violent animal!

According to a study from the Center For Disease Control (CDC)1, approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur in the United States each year, and 800,000 of those bites result in medical care. The U.S. population was approximately 328.2 million people in 2019. That means a dog bites 1 out of every 73 people.

Pitbulls are responsible for 60% of all injuries and 63% of ocular injuries. Pitbull attacks have higher morbidity rates, higher hospital charges, and a higher risk of death than attacks by other breeds. During 2005-2017, pit bulls killed one citizen every 16.7 days, totaling up to 284 Americans.

There’s even a stoey in the quran where there was a pet dog too.

You're referring to the dog [Qitmeer-their hunting dog] who was with the righteous companions, in their cave, Surah Al-Kahf, Surah #18.
However, even if he were a pet: keep in mind that, the laws of their time may differ from ours, -for example: In the time of Yahya and Jesus/Isa [peace be upon them both], they would bow to each other as a form of greeting/respect, but we know in Islam of the Prophet Muhammad [ صلى الله عليه وسلم ]
that it is forbidden to bow to anyone, except for/to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic.

"Whoever keeps a dog, his good deeds will decrease every day by one qeeraat (a unit of measurement), unless it is a dog for farming or herding." According to another report: ". . . unless it is a dog for herding sheep, farming or hunting." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 2322)

It is also forbidden for us to sell a dog/and or, receive payment for it.

Of course, with this being said, this doesn't mean that we are mean to them, or don't assist dogs if we can, with food and water.
