The famous excerpt from the U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address delivered November 19, 1863:
that these dead shall not have died in vain - that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
Sustainable and enduring governance should come from bottom up. Our political, tribal and law-enforcement fragmentation that plagues Somalia to this day can become our main strength in the future. Somalia can adopt federal system or even confederacy as a model to solve our divisions and come out as a functioning country similar to Switzerland and hopefully the US. I propose the United States of Somalia (USS).
What do you think? Can Somalia and Somaliland start this process? All large administrative units within the two will become founding states.
Somalia needs to stop treating Somaliland as if it owns it.
Somaliland needs to stop pushing for independence.
Both need to sit down and negotiate in good faith.
Let's brainstorm and figure out what is the best way for our future. Just keep in mind, it is our destiny to live side by side. We can either drag each other down or lift each other up.
Many countries want to see us divided and quarreling. If not for the international community, Ethiopia would have probably swallowed us both by now. It's landlocked and yearning for sea access. Kenya would want nothing more than slow grabbing Somali lands and later claiming them as theirs.
Your thoughts? How should we survive and move forward? The vicious cycle we are in right now will lead to a total collapse of Somali nation one day. It is not sustainable.
