Yeah one of the sources he cited in that thread talks about how we were exporting these into Yemen during the rasulid period (1229- 1454) so if we were able to export these robes 700-800 years ago then its probably way older than that.
A really intresting question that I dont think will ever be able to answer would be to find out if these robes predate the Islamic period.

I had a look back at those Greek documents and they report “Cloaks from Arsinoe and dyed cloth” being traded to the Berbers of the far side Ports.

lTraders were also travelling in boats to the Arabian peninsula. Cloaks are mentioned in the bible as signs of Hebrew royalty and prophethood. Therefore, it would not be a surprise, given the shared cultural traits of Afroasiatic people in many different realms- from rock art, ostrich feathers, white robes, snake mythology, etc, if pre Islamic Somali chiefs wore some kind of cloak to signify their status. We were also in close contact with Yemenis from what we know of the T haplogroup and also the introduction of the camels and so forth. Which makes me wonder now if the Nubians had royal cloaks?

That’s only what he witnessed. Who knows if ancient Somali chiefs had their own early Juba style designs. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised as Somalis share many cultural traits with other Afroasiatic peoples. It might have even looked completely different to later Islamic one, but it would have been the same concept.

no most of it was silver in every picture its silver, gold is very expensive and rare, I doubt some nomads could afford it
