The Rights of the Sahabah over the Ummah

The Rights of the Sahabah over the Ummah

By Bassam Zawadi

Dr. Salih bin Abdulaziz bin Uthman Sindi in his book, "The Rights of the Sahabah over the Ummah," (حقوق الصحابة على الأمة) listed ten rights which the Sahabah have over us. They are:

1) We must love them.

2) We must believe in their righteousness and that they (collectively) are the best Muslims from this ummah and are closest to the truth in their beliefs.

3) We believe in the individual superiority of individual Sahabah over others if the Qur’an and Sunnah allude to this.

4) We must mention them in a positive light and praise them and talk about their goodness.

5) We must testify that Allah has bestowed His Mercy on them and granted them paradise in a general sense. If the Qur’an and Sunnah allude to this, we must do the same for the specific Sahabah by name.

6) We must pray for them and their forgiveness.

7) We remain silent regarding their mistakes and not be negatively critical of them for the errors they committed.

8) We remain silent about the fitnah between them and do not delve into it without justification.

9) We must hate those who hate them and defend their integrity from those who slander them.

10) We should seek to emulate them and be upon the guidance they were upon.
