Michael Mariano could have probably been the second best if not the best after after Siad Barre.. smart articulate and secular. Besides very advanced for his time. He was one of the very few politicians in the 60’s who believe in ideological political parties unlike the rest who formed tribal parties

I have no doubt he could have been a good leader a true nationalist and a son of the soil

I’m partially related to Michaels wife. She belonged to the Christian ilma Siyad family from Las Ano. Some of the remaining family members reside in Djibouti.

The Christian Somalis, the likes of Farah George, Abdi Laurence, Michael Mariano, Anthony Mariano, Clement Salool etc were highly educated secular nationalists. They were mainly doctors and lawyers.

They were the children of Muslim Somalis killed by the Dervish. Their relatives wouldn’t/couldn’t raise them because they were afraid of being punished by the Dervish. So the British relocated the children (100’s) to Berbera before taking them to the Catholic mission in Aden who raised them and educated them.

Michael Mariano was the most prominent Pan Somali advocate. He received a state funeral for his service to the Somali people all across the Somali Peninsula and Siad Barre was among the pallbearers.

How ironic that naive kids today believe the Salihiya Dervish bigots fought against British (Christian) rule when the vast majority of their attacks and lootings were targeted towards innocent Somali Muslims.

Michael Mariano was the best politician to ever hail from the Somali peninsula. He was a visionary, well spoken and educated. He had a party called the National United Front (NUF). He was the guy who said somaliland should not rush into joining somalia and wait instead. The only knock against Michael was he was Gaal and that is something you can't look past in the Somali culture. This guy for sure would have been the greatest president somalia ever had.
