Modern Ismailis are a rather odd bunch. Never met one I didn't like, to be fair, but their practices... they pray salat with a picture of their current Imam to either side and do the 3 prayers a day thing. Used to be that he was actually right in front of them in picture form when they prayed until some of them argued that this was against monotheism, alhamdulillah.

In many ways it really just feels like a cult built around the Imam family who are, funnily enough, just Europeanized socialites at this point. They married cadaan women for a few generations and just look white, practice socialite playboy culture in their youth, dress western and generally roll in western rich socialite circles. Yet most of their followers are brown and actually devout and practicing people.

They maintain robust networks, though. Help each other get jobs, build businesses together, maintain robust community mosques. It's made some of them very well off. Most of the Ismailis I've met in my life were upper middle-class to straight-up rich except for the first one I ever met who's just normal middle-class. Nice people.

Alot of East African Ismailis have an affinity or connection to Blackness. I met a rich Ismaili who mentioned twice to me that his sister is married to a Sudanese man and seemed so proud of it. I wonder how much of this is also due to race declarations that dont go deep enough: is there or was there a South Asian box to check? This is just a drive by smear.
