I think he's overrated, the Persian empire was already suffering from widespread instability and revolts , The Persian controlled all of the Mideast and alot of these nations weren't happy being ruled by Persians , so they switched sides as fast as they could ,
after the defeat of Gaugamela the whole empire collapsed instantly and there was no one else who could stop the Macedonians untill they reached India and the rest was history lol.
