The Majeerteen clan were the most powerful clan in the Somali Republic from 1960-1969 and dominated the newly established republic politically and economically (Nation Building: Why Some Countries Come Together While Others Fall Apart), both the popular political party SYL ( Somali Youth League), and the Somali national flag were established by this clan. During this time period the Majeerteen produced two prime ministers and one president, many believe the Majeerteen dominance in the Somali Republic was due to their recent history of statehood with the Majeerteen and Hobyo Sultanates. It’s no coincidence that the Somali Republic began to decline when the democratically elected Majeerteen president was assassinated and a military coup occurred by a Marehan leader Siad Barre took power, “he saw himself having taken over the state from the Majeerteen clan” (Clan Cleansing in Somalia: The Ruinous Legacy of 1991).

Siad Barre turned the Somali population against this powerful Majeerteen clan who he feared and went on to commit atrocities and marginalize this clan which ultimately led to the decline and eventual death of the Somali Republic.

With our long history of statesmanship, this makes sense but I can't help but wonder about the Raxanweyn with their Geledi Kingdom.
