Teaching of Af Maay in SWS schools has begun officially.

Not a good thing as dialect should be only spoken among friends family or in the place where you reside with your fellow kinsmen but in no circumstance should it be a working language or be spoken by politicians or the media and in schools that will eventually lead generation of people who can't probably speak the main language Af Soomaali to other somalis leading into confrontation happening between the communities.

No you are wrong. Its actually the opposite.

Till today you will find Maay speakers that can't speak nor write Af Maay. If the previous governments done such then the entire population of maay speakers would at least be bilingual. But the reality is that your mindset has been a complete and utter failure.

Thank god for federalism. We can teach people in our state Af Maay and make it the medium of teaching and that's our personal choice.

We all have af-guri and it should remain just there, in the Guri. In polite company a Somali should speak elegant refined Af Somaali like that of the Sayid. That means no Maaymaay in public speeches or TV. This also counts for all the other guri including that Banadiri one and the weird Hutu Xaayow one

That is not true. Af banaadiri and Af xaayow are all dialects that come under Af Maxaa tiri. Similar to the reer waqooyi dialect، the reer Bari dialect or the reer mudug dialect.

Af can't be equated to Af xaayow. Af xaayow and all these other dialects I listed above are all mutually intelligible with Af Maxaa while Af Maay isn't.

Af Maay could be considered its own language (I'm not a linguist), it has it's own dialects that come under it. Just like Af Maxaa tiri has Af xaayow and Reer Bari dialect, Af Maay has dhoobley dialect, reer Bakool dialect, Gosha dialect. Even different Mirifle clans like Eelaay, Leysaan and geelidle have their own dialects of Af Maay where they pronounce words differently.

Maxaa Tiri and Maay are two different dialects, the regional variations of both dialects are accents. The standard in official comms on a national basis should only be the Maxaa Tiri dialect with the Galmudug accent which is best intelligable to the rest of the country as it is right in the middle and has the least isolated linguistics - anyone trading from SouthWest, Benadir or Jubaland has to communicate with a person from Galmudug to reach the North and vice versa. Every country have standard dialects & accents coming from their Midland areas because it's mutually intelligable and the most harnessed. Besides this FYI, federalism in the US allows states to adopt working dialects and in schools, even schools i attended in Europe provide options to learn a new language either in French or Spanish.

proper maay is practically another language. they have a different alphabet and diphthongs and have som different grammar and arent mutually intelligible. btw azeri and turkish are closer and are more mutually intelligible. dont confuse proper maay with the reer magaal diluted version. af maay wasn't written down in the writing campaigns of the 70s possibly to keep homogeneity.

I can barely understand the konfur dialect now their teaching them a whole different language.

There is no problem with teach af maay however their should be a common language for the entire country.

The better your knowledge and speaking of Maxaa Tiri, the more understandable Maay becomes. Every Somali Parent will typically understand standard Maay better than you while you and your parent both never learnt it. They just use some isolated vocabulary that a Somali speaker like me or you who may have learnt it as a second language in the diaspora would struggle to grasp. A native Somali who knows deep vocabulary will pick up on Maay very easily. It follows the same use of ordered grammar, long vowels, suffixes and length of syllables as Maxaa Tiri, esp some southern accents. Joornaalka Akhri is Joornaalga Agri not Agri Joornaalga. 'Hebel maxaa ku tiri' is 'Hebel maay ga tere' in Baydhabo. Some ppl think Maay is closer to Oromo which couldn't be more wrong. Affaan Oromo has more syllables per word on average than any Somali dialect.

Whats the issue in teaching Af Maay in schools inside of SWS. Majority of reer SWS speak af Maay as their main dialect.

Most people in SWS are bilingual and can speak Af Maay and Af Maxaa. Schools should be taught in Af Maay as that is the majority dialect in that region

I don't agree that Af Maay and Af Maxaa are mutually intelligible. Maybe to people that live around Maay speaking regions and are familiar with the dialect.

The further north you go the less Af Maay is mutually intelligible. As much as someone is familiar with Somali language, someone in Hargeisa or burco won't understand barely anything from Af Maay.

The only way that someone can understand af maay in my opinion is familiarisation. Learning the grammatical differences of Af Maay through listening will allow you to understand 50+% of Af Maay.

But someone from Waqooyi who hasn't heard Af Maay a day in his life will assume it is Oromo and not a Somali language.

Also the similarity between Maay and Oromo is not based on the words but more the alphabet. They like us don't have the 'c' or 'x' that Af Maxaa tiri does. So to the virgin ears it may sound fairly similar.
