I recently realised that somali writing is so different from speech that it's making this too hard for me, who only learned to speak somali, but never to write.

Teach me some somali words that can be used generally in anything, and you mostly use

So you can't read somali? Get into the habit of reading somali news articles for conversational level, then move on to books to learn traditional af somali.

ngl I avoid reading anything written in somali because the double vowels in every other word gives me a headache, it's so unnecessary.

A great way to learn and the best way is to listen to Gabay and Maxadaro. You will learn complex and sophisticated af somali.

Written Somali is actually really simple, the letters correspond to sounds and that's about it. I feel like you need to become more familiar with Somali in general. For conversational Somali there are a few YouTube channels you can check out whose content is in Somali and deals with a number of different topics. Otherwise Suarez gave very good advice.
