Somalis have a thing called qaaran in which the habaro from the same qabil/neighborhood or friendship group raise money for their friends whose child is about to marry. That is a tradition that is clearly dying out.
So yes, we do help each other out.
Preposterous!
I know that thing very well. The child who’s getting married’s mom’s friends collect a $100 from one another. If they generous they collect $200. Add that up and I assure you it doesn’t go above $2500 max. I’m being very generous here.
Therefore, this is not what we’re talking about.
You know dam well what’m talking about.
In other great traditions each family that’s coming must bring that envelope.
In our tradition of lately…when the couple give birth..relatives (mainly the grandmother’s friends ) would come over to the house to bombard the family with diapers and diapers and diapers and diapers.
They need to learn to give them money.
