Peter Biar Ajak is a very successful, highly distinguished academic; he studied at Harvard; has a PhD from the University of Cambridge; and is an Associate Fellow at the University of Oxford.

What's the current political system of S. Sudan? Is there a (multi-party) democracy or is it premature to determine? It's going to be interesting following the election coming up.

There's really no democracy in South Sudan; we have a State that essentially owes its existence to an armed movement/political party; and they feel as though they shouldn't have to open up the political environment to free contest and debate.

We're essentially waiting for Salva Kiir (and his generation) to drop dead; we're also pushing for security sector reform, so that Salva Kiir isn't succeeded by the Generals in the generation below him. We respect our elders for what they've done, but we're also deeply disappointed.

No, the war is estimated to have resulted in 380k deaths; and we were losing more than 100, 000 a year for 22 years during the 2nd Sudanese civil war, so it wasn't exactly sunshine with them. Plus, we share absolutely nothing in common with Sudanese Arabs and could not come under their power.

John Garang forsaw this that is why he wanted not to leave sudan but become a confederacy with sudan.

Garang also knew that the Arabs would never have accepted a confederacy and that's why he gave South Sudanese the option to secede.

The machar vs Salva kir stalemate will continue.
While capital flight happens and your money boosts the economy of Uganda and Kenya.

The "stalemate" is coming to an end; elections will be held soon; and the resumption of full scale war is unlikely.
