The Arabs though already knew that somalis in the North and those in the south were the same people, infact Arab geographers called somalis "barbar" while referring to the inhabitants of Xamar, Berbera and also Merca. The coast of Somalia was Indeed sometimes referred to Al ajam (foreigner) but this doesn't mean much and there's no evidence that the word Somali didn't refer to all Somali inhabited territories
