A general piece of advice and reminder for us all: we all have great potential, but it can only be realized through introspection.

As a general reminder for all of us, it’s best not to get caught up in the small, loud minority. Somali or otherwise who thrive on drama and tomfoolery. It’s far healthier to align yourself with grounded, level-headed individuals who take their family, professional, personal, educational, and religious lives seriously.

We can’t save everyone or expect everyone to act the way we want. Sometimes the best approach is to let people live as they choose while you quietly focus on your own path and priorities. Don’t worry, you will find people on the same journey. It’s similar to how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ attracted companions: followers were drawn through personal connections, belief in his message, and respect for his character.

I would also advise most Somalis to ignore clan political narratives (they’re nonsense), as well as race-based identity politics in the West, lookism, and any form of online rage baiting. We don’t need to respond to or defend ourselves against every provocation. If you feel prone to reacting, step away from the spaces or limit your exposure. The Prophet ﷺ ignored ridicule and insults from his contemporaries, leaving it to Allah, as the Qur’an says: “And do not mind the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Ignore their harm and rely upon Allah. And sufficient is Allah as a Disposer of [your] affairs.” [al-Ahzâb 33:48]

All of you have the potential to live fulfilling lives and find stability but only if you allow space for introspection.

This is the mindset I’m committing to going forward.
